Some 4.8 million Mexicans are thought to be living as undocumented immigrants in the United States, immigration officials estimate, and about 52 percent of the country's farmworkers are here without permission, the General Accounting Office figures. They send more than $9 billion a year to Mexico to help their families with food, clothing, medicine, and housing; the flood of cash exceeds the government budgets of some Mexican localities.
