Hunter examines a recreation of a carved canoe. This is not a good photo, but I included it because of the beauty and craftmanship. It reminds me of scrimshaw. This is a fragment of pottery.
A ceremonial pipe use to smoke "sacred" tobacco.
Burial mounds.
This is a recreation of the typical indian home of that era.
Marley and Hunter explore the interior.

This is the site where the elite of the village lived.

see ya monday

Tomorrow morning we're getting up early and Dorothy and I, Marley, and Hunter are going on an adventure. We driving down to the Oachita Mountains and taking the scenic drive through the fall foliage. There are lots of museums, and other fun things do do (like dig for diamonds). We'll be back after the weekend and I hope to post some photos and notes describing the trip.

What's money? A man is a success if he gets up in the morning and goes to bed at night and in between does what he wants to do.

jenna's dedication

This morning at church, Jenna Grace was dedicated. In our church this is a ceremony where the parents promise before the church community to bring up the child in the "nurture and admonition of the Lord", and the congregation promises to help raise Jenna by offering their prayers and support. In the photo Jenna gives the pastor one of her famous smiles.

quote of the day

My life has no purpose, no direction, no aim, no meaning, and yet I'm happy. I can't figure it out. What am I doing right?

i wonder about hunter

I wonder about my grandson Hunter. I wonder what life will be like for him when he's a grown man. Why? Because he's a swashbuckler at age three. He's the Erroll Flynn of the pre-school set. He wakes up each morning with a smile on his face and careens through the day from one adventure to the next bumping his head, scraping his knee, and enduring various and sundry accidents and mishaps without even slowing down. The fear that keeps the rest of us mortals from engaging in high risk behavior doesn't seem to register in his mind. A fall from the monkey bars which drove a front tooth back into his gums didn't discourage him; he thinks it makes him look like a rock star. When he receives a bump on the noggin or some other injury he soaks up all the attention and sympathy he can get from his mom, but then he's soon back at it. After a few trial runs down the hall in his Halloween Superman costume he made his parents return it to the store because it wouldn't fly. He thinks he's a super hero, and he may be right. With the help and prayers of his parents, sisters, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins (It will take all of us) he'll survive childhood and adolescence. Be watching for him. He'll be tomorrow's Nascar driver, jet pilot, or astronaut.

over in arkansas

This morning I drove to Harrison, AR to a book sale at the public library. I bought a lot of books.
On my way home I stopped at the Kings River Country Store for lunch. I had ham, fried potatoes, and a big bowl of beans and cornbread.

When I saw their sign I knew I'd found a good place to eat.

jolly roger sweet shop

Our friends Roger and Judy Barber are creating a candy store in Siloam Springs. It will be called Jolly Roger's Sweet Shop. The community is eagerly awaiting its opening. I was helping Roger with some of the remodeling today and took a moment to take his picture.

Dorothy came by to check on the progress.
Roger has applied an artistic touch to the refurbishing of this old building.

goldilocks finds a chair that is just right

After sitting in every chair in every furniture store in three counties and two states, Goldilocks aka Dorothy, finally finds a chair that fits her.

giant pumpkin?

Remember those giant pumpkins I planted? That variety has been known to grow to over 1400lbs. I thought I might be able to coax at least 250 lbs out of one, but look what happened. Below is my entire harvest. The largest one weighed in at a misshapen 13 lbs. Marley's going to be disappointed.
