tomatoes

Every year I drive to Tulsa and buy my tomato plants. This year I planted an heirloom variety called "Royal Hillbilly".  They have a good balance between tart and sweet.  The one shown below weighs 1-1/2 lbs. That's a quarter on the table next to it.

Jenna wanted to pose holding the red beauty. We're having the grandkids over tonight for tacos so a few minutes after I took these photos I chopped it up and combined it with onions, jalapenos fresh from the garden, cilantro, lemon juice, salt, and garlic and presto! Pico de Gallo.

garden

Last night I cooked green beans and new potatoes fresh from the garden. We also had a fresh cucumber. The day before I made some cole slaw from a head of cabbage I harvested. This morning I told Dorothy that gardening is like having a baby. Now, I know what my female readers are thinking (just like Dorothy), how can a man possibly know what childbirth is like? Well, here's my explanation: Every spring I forget about all the pain, sweat, and hard work that gardening requires, and I can't wait to get to the earth and start digging. But, now that June has arrived and with it rising temperatures and humidity and wildly growing weeds, I think why did I start this again? See what I mean?

another warm day

I took advantage of two splendid days to work in my garden. I've tilled it twice and I'll soon be ready to plant potatoes and onions.

I ought to be able to grow some groceries on this plot, don't you think?
