ice storm

The weather service is forecasting a major winter ice storm for our area tonight. Kelly, Burk, and the kids came down yesterday and Burk cut wood to add to their pile. I got my kerosene stove ready just in case we lose power. Ice accumulations can break power lines and wreak havoc everywhere. Dorothy went to work today and she will get home just before the storm hits, but I don't expect her to be able to manage the slick roads for the next two days. Our winters are not as cold as they were twenty years ago. The ponds would freeze and the mercury would stay below freezing for days at a time. Now the temperatures take more of a roller coaster ride through the season and we get more ice than snow. Driving on snow is manageable if you're careful, but ice, that's another story. There are few things more terrifying than being at the wheel of a car that has lost traction and is unresponsive to brakes or steering as it do-se-do's into oncoming traffic or a steep embankment.
The positive side is that Dorothy and I will be wrapped in a blanket on the couch watching old movies and sipping hot chocolate laced with a touch of brandy. Let the north wind blow! We'll be toasty.

Update on my parents: They have lost power. They keep hearing limbs falling. It seems like they have a hedge of protection around them. The limbs are missing the house and the propane tank. They have enough kerosene for a few days.

What a great way to wait out a storm---however, if we were to do that here, we'd be wrapped up and brandied from November to April.

That sounds so sweet...now I wish we had ice to keep us home!
