kinda mad

I'm kinda mad at two things. First, Dorothy's decision to drive to work yesterday was based on the weather report which forecast a dusting of snow, nothing to worry about. She had not been at work for more than an hour and had to return home because the very light snow had turned into a major winter storm. It snowed non-stop for twenty hours. That evening the TV meteorologist, with no embarrassment or apology described the event as if his earlier forecast was spot on.  Second, I'm mad at myself for foolishly going to the mailbox to check for mail. On the way back to the house I slipped and fell twisting my knee. If I had just fell down I would have been OK because thick powdery snow is a good cushion. But, in an attempt to save my dignity I tried to maintain a vertical position and hurt my knee in the process.

I looked out the patio door this morning and saw no birds. Then I looked down and saw this cat.

The birds were up in the tree awaiting the cat's departure
Since I was hobbling around this morning it was up to Dorothy to feed the birds

Snow is in the forecast for tomorrow and another major storm is expected for Tuesday. Dorothy may not return to work until the Spring thaw.

imminent blizzard

With modern technology meteorologists are making long term forecasts. By long term I mean the middle of next week. It was 70 degrees yesterday and it felt so good to go outside without a coat and breathe some fresh air. Then, last night I started receiving email alerts for a winter storm that is approaching from the west. The system is still in the Pacific Ocean and the weather service is predicting as much as 10 inches of snow and ice, and bone chilling cold. With the ice storm of two years ago still fresh in my memory I'll be spending the next two days stocking up on kerosene and candles. We lost electricity for 12 days in that storm so I'm getting ready to batten down the hatches.  Of course, there's always the possibility that the forecast is wrong.  I'll keep you posted.

after the storm

The storm has passed and we made it through fine. We received 1/3" of ice and then five inches of snow on top of that. Some of the highways in the area were closed down for awhile, but traffic seems to be going by on the highway. There were power outages west of us, but we were spared this year. Now we just wait for the thaw. We have the whole weekend before Dorothy has to go back to work so it's watching old movies and eating comfort food for us. Our daughter, Rachel, whose been visiting for the last two months was able to make her flight back to St. Thomas this morning. She's going from 19 degrees to 80 degrees in a matter of a few hours.
