I was thinking the same thing - an island keeps the openess but gives you your work top.
Phew..I was just going to say...that stove must be moved! LOL!
Seems like this gives you a lot more for your money on that sliding glass door. The light and view are now accessible to kitchen. Good move for the spontaneous one you made it sound like.
