quote of the day

"For some of us, books are as important as almost anything else on earth. What a miracle it is that out of these small, flat, rigid squares of paper unfolds world after world after world, worlds that sing to you, comfort and quiet or excite you. Books help us understand who we are and how we are to behave. They show us what community and friendship mean; they show us how to live and die."

Another reason to admire Anne Lamott. Who would I be without books? Could I have survived my childhood (which was not bad, only lonely)?

If I had a prayer, and I don't, it would be to keep enough eye-sight to be able to read until my last day.

I hear people longing for the strength of their youth. Just give me back my 20 yr old eyes.

Books (and libraries) were my salvation. I escaped the ordinary and the fearsome with books. And they still do...
