another leader of the 21st century
On our trip to California we stopped in Twenty Nine Palms at a McDonald's to buy some cokes. The cokes cost 3.00 and I handed the young man behind the counter a 20.00 bill. I heard him say "uh, oh". I looked at the cash register and it displayed: "No Change 00.00". The boy started counting on his fingers and after a moment I said, "seventeen". He counted out the money and hesitated before giving it to me as if I may have tried to fool him into giving more change than what was due. With the millions of dollars being poured into education why can't these kids do simple arithmetic or read? I think we need a back to basics program. Have the three R's been forgotten?

Oh that is just sad. Imagine if there was tax and you gave him change - he would have had an aneurysm right there.
Writing skills seem to be lacking, too. I cringe when I read blogs written by high school and college students. The grammar is atrocious,
the punctuation is non-existent, and the spelling is even worse than the grammar.
I wonder how many words I misspelled in this comment. No spell-check in the comment section.
One problem is they are worried more about the kids weight than the grades. Let the kindergartners have some popcorn on a field trip for goodness sakes! Kelly
It's scary when my 5th grader is allowed to use a calculator at school instead of doing it in his head. I make him write it out..and he HATES that. Problems I see amoung High School students...spelling and handwriting. They have spell check and type everything. If they had to write a letter by hand....they would be in trouble. Haven't you noticed even addressing an envelope is difficult for this generation?
The other day I gave the check out person $20.04 for an $.89 item. She really couldn't figure it out. Even when I said that I didn't want anymore pennies. I finally told her what she would give me back for change. Ugh!!!
